From Image to Video

Take a beautiful still and bring it gently to life.

The big idea

This is the moment that still feels like magic: feeding a finished image into an image-to-video tool and watching it move. You describe the motion you want — a slow push-in, drifting clouds, a flicker of firelight — set a length and shape, and out comes a short clip. The secret to good results is to start from a strong still and keep the motion subtle.

Key insight: Start from a great still and ask for gentle, believable motion. Over-the-top movement is what makes AI video look like ‘slop’.

Still to moving picture

Drop in a finished image, describe the motion, choose settings — and you get a short clip. (There's a real animated example in the Midjourney Book.)

Key points to remember

Image-to-video animates a still you already love.
Describe the motion you want, simply and specifically.
Subtle motion looks cinematic; too much looks fake.
Keep clips short and in the right aspect ratio.
