Key Insight: Tracking vs. Managing

There is a critical difference between tracking goals and managing performance. AI excels at the former: aggregating data, calculating progress, spotting trends, and flagging risks. But tracking is not management. A dashboard that shows an objective is off-track cannot tell you why, or what to do about it.

The human manager's role is to understand context: Is this person struggling because the goal was unrealistic, because they lack support, or because priorities shifted? AI surfaces the signal. Humans provide the judgment. The best goal tracking systems make it easier for managers to have better conversations, not to replace those conversations with data.
