Key Insights from This Lesson

The Partial Truth Problem

The most dangerous AI hype is not outright fiction — it is a genuine advance wrapped in exaggerated framing. A real 20% improvement becomes "revolutionary." A narrow lab result becomes "human-level." The kernel of truth makes the exaggeration harder to spot and easier to spread.

Headlines vs Reality

Headlines are optimised for clicks, not accuracy. The gap between what a headline says and what the underlying research shows is often enormous. Always read past the headline and check the primary source before forming an opinion or sharing the story.

The Honest Rewrite Test

If you can rewrite a headline to be both accurate and far less exciting, the original was probably hype. This simple mental exercise is one of the fastest ways to calibrate your response to AI news. If the honest version is boring, the exciting version was misleading.

Practical Rule of Thumb

When reading AI coverage, apply the 3-source rule: before acting on any AI claim, find at least three independent sources that confirm it. If only the company and its investors are saying it, treat it as marketing until proven otherwise. Peer-reviewed research with independent replication is the gold standard.
